beferry
Disney’s Snow White remake has been a subject of controversy ever since its announcement in 2022, and the release of the official trailer has done little to quell concerns. With criticisms ranging from the casting choices to the departure from the original fairy tale’s themes, many fans are already skeptical about the movie’s direction. Let’s break down the trailer and see what’s raising eyebrows. VFX: A Step Back in Time The trailer for Snow White introduces us to a world of magic and adventure, but the first thing that stands out is the outdated VFX. The visual effects resemble the animation of Polar Express, which, though groundbreaking when it first came out, now feels antiquated in comparison to the more sophisticated animations in recent Disney films. The 2024 animation standards have been set by films like Moana 2, which are far more immersive, and it’s hard to ignore how Snow White doesn’t seem to keep up with modern expectations. The Casting Debate: Gal Gadot vs. Rachel Ziegler Gal Gadot has been cast as the Evil Queen, which seems like a promising choice on paper, given her established track record with powerful roles. However, the real conversation is about Rachel Ziegler playing the titular Snow White. Many fans have voiced concerns over the casting of Ziegler, as she doesn’t fit the traditional image of Snow White. The controversy comes from Disney’s portrayal of Snow White as “the fairest of them all,” and in comparison to Gal Gadot, Ziegler doesn’t seem to match up physically. This visual disparity raises questions about whether Disney is straying too far from the original essence of the character. Animated Dwarves and a Missed Opportunity One of the biggest disappointments in the trailer is the animation of the dwarves. Disney could have easily cast actors in these iconic roles, yet the decision was made to go with animated versions of the dwarves instead. This seems like a strange choice, especially when you consider that The Wizard of Oz in 1938 managed to feature 124 dwarves. It feels like a missed opportunity to offer more representation and authenticity in casting. Instead, we get a more cartoonish version of these beloved characters that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Snow White as a Warrior: A Drastic Shift Perhaps the most jarring aspect of the trailer is the portrayal of Snow White as a fierce, battle-ready warrior. Historically, Snow White was known for her kindness and innocence, so this sudden transformation into an action-hero figure feels out of place. Disney’s decision to turn Snow White into a warrior seems like a misguided attempt to modernize the character and make her more appealing to today’s audience, but it might ultimately alienate those who love the original, gentle Snow White.
